3 Day Transition Class (3 - 4 Year Olds)
General Description
The Transition Class is for three-year-olds and young four-year-olds who are ready for a three-day program. Classes focus on social interaction, language development, fine motor and gross motor activities. Class size is limited to 16 (one lead teacher, one assistant teacher). The transition class meets at 2 different times on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: mornings from 9:00am - 11:30am or afternoons from 12:30pm - 3:00pm. Curriculum Goals
Social:
- Follows classroom routine
- Plays independently and with other students
- Is able to take turns
- Participates in imaginary play
- Follows two step directions
- Takes care of personal items
- Begins being able to resolve conflicts with other students
Language:
- Uses language appropriately to express wants and needs
- Carries on conversations with teachers and other students
- Can relay an experience to a teacher
Math:
- Can complete beginning patterns
- Recognizes numbers "0-10"
- Can group or match mulitple items
- Can sequence multiple pictures and identify items out of sequence
Science:
- Participates in simple science activities and is able to predict and discuss what is happening. Begins to understand cause and effect.
Pre-reading:
- Recognizes their written name, and can find it in several places in the room
- Sequences pictures to make a story
- Begins recognizing letters and their sounds
Fine-motor:
- Engages in activities that encourage the use of fingers and hand muscles including
painting, molding play-dough, and drawing or writing with markers and pencils.
Gross-motor:
- Climbs, jumps, walks, runs during gross-motor activity time
- Participates in ball handling, music, dance and game time
Teachers use:
- Zoo-phonics— for beginning phonics based reading
- Tubbing– a math program that uses manipulatives for sorting, categorizing, patterning, adding and subtracting
- Storybook journeys– using a book and the story line to present math, science and literacy lessons.
All units incorporate these goals in a variety of ways to developmentally challenge the student. These are goals we will work toward in class, but each child will move forward at their own developmental rate.
