5 Day Pre-K Class (4-5 Year Olds)

General Description

The Pre-Kindergarten class meets the growing needs of students who are ready for a five-day program. This class focuses on expanding pre-reading, writing, science and math concepts. Class size is limited to 18 (one lead teacher, one assistant teacher). The class meets Monday through Friday in the mornings from 8:30am - 11:30am or in the afternoons from 12:30pm - 3:30pm. Curriculum Goals

Social:
  • Independently follows classroom routine
  • Initiates play with other students
  • Participates and takes turns when playing organized games and during circle time
  • Initiates and participates in imaginary play
  • Follows two and three step directions without reminder
  • Independently takes care of self and personal items
Language:
  • Uses appropriate language to express opinions, wants and needs
  • Uses appropriate language to initiate conversation with other children
  • Uses appropriate language to initiate play with other children
  • Uses appropriate language to relay a story or experience to the teacher and other students
Math:
  • Recognizes numbers "0-20"
  • Sorts objects by size, color, shape
  • Completes AB and ABC patterns with manipulatives
  • Does simple addition and subtraction with manipulatives
  • Counts objects up to 20
  • Recognizes number sequences up to 20
Science:
  • Engages in simple science experiments
  • Predicts simple outcomes
  • Describes and understands reasoning for outcomes
Pre-reading:
  • Recognizes upper and lower case alphabet letters
  • Knows alphabet sequence
  • Recognizes some written words
  • Understands and knows letter sounds
  • Shows interest in retelling stories
  • Sequences simple pictures and tells a story about the pictures
Fine-motor:
  • Engages in coloring, painting and writing activities
  • Writes name using upper and lower case letters
  • Draws simple pictures
  • Duplicates shapes
  • Uses scissors correctly to cut basic shapes
Gross-motor:
  • Climbs, jumps, walks, runs during gross-motor activity time
  • Participates in ball handling, music, dance and game time
Teachers use:
  • A phonics program for phonics based reading
  • Tubbing– a math program that uses manipulatives for sorting, categorizing, patterning, adding and subtracting
All units incorporate these goals in a variety of ways to developmentally challenge the student. These are goals we will work toward in class, but each child will move forward at their own developmental rate.
