3 Day and 4 Day Four Year Classes
General Description
Four-year-olds are ready to be independent and are becoming aware of the world around them. These classes gives the children an opportunity to explore many new things. Science, math and beginning reading activities are combined with social interaction and cooperative play to make an active class. Class size is limited to 18 (one lead teacher, one assistant teacher).
There are two Four year programs: 3 day and 4 day*. 3 day classes meet on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays in the mornings from 8:30am -11:30am or in the afternoons from 12:30pm - 3:30pm. 4 day classes meet Monday - Thursday from 8:30 - 11:30 am or 12:30pm - 3:30 pm. Curriculum Goals
Social:
- Follows classroom routine
- Is able to sit and attend during project and teacher directed activities
- Plays independently and with other students
- Participates in imaginary play
- Follows two and three step directions
- Takes care of personal items
- Is able to resolve conflicts with other students in an appropriate fashion
Language:
- Uses language appropriately to express opinions, wants and needs
- Carries on conversations with teachers and other students
- Can relay a story or an experience to the teacher and other students
Math:
- Recognizes numbers "0-10"
- Can complete AB and ABC patterns with colors and manipulatives
- Can do simple addition and subtraction with manipulatives
- Understands one to one correlation
Science:
- Participates in simple science activities and is able to predict and discuss what is happening
Pre-reading:
- Recognizes upper and lower case alphabet
- Recognizes some written words
- Understands and knows letter sounds
Fine-motor:
- Writes their name using upper and lower case letters
- Draws simple pictures
- Engages in coloring, painting and writing activities
Gross-motor:
- Climbs, jumps, walks, runs during gross-motor activity time
- Participates in ball handling, music, dance and game time
Teachers use:
- Zoo-phonics— for beginning phonics based reading
- Tubbing– a math program that uses manipulatives for sorting, categorizing, patterning, adding and subtracting
All units incorporate these goals in a variety of ways to developmentally challenge the student. These are goals we will work toward in class, but each child will move forward at their own developmental rate.
